The Buccaneers have a true kicking competition

Ryan Succop

Ryan Succop was a huge reason why the Buccaneers got better on special teams over the last two seasons, but expecting kickers to stay good over several seasons is generally a bad bet.

Succop was far from bad last season, but he was moving closer to mediocre.

The Bucs now have to answer some difficult questions. Do they expect to see an uptick after 2021 back to his 2020 levels? Was 2021 a decline that isn’t going to stop?

Needless to say, these aren’t questions the Buccaneers want to deal with as they look for another Super Bowl this year.

Instead, the battle in camp will likely be what decides who will start at the position going forward, and Jose Borregales isn’t going to be an easy out.

Borregales would be much cheaper, younger, and could give the Bucs a bit more confidence if he has a good camp performance this year. Kickers and punters should always have to earn their jobs and play to keep them, and another slump by Succop in camp could be the final straw for a team that can’t afford to go back to mediocre kicking.

This cut likely wouldn’t come until right before the season begins, but it wouldn’t surprise anyone if it actually happened.
