The Buccaneers are getting younger and cheaper across the roster. It looks like special teams are the current focus for the group that is limiting waste.

The name of the game in the NFL is always finding younger, cheaper players that cab outperform the veterans. This doesn’t always happen, and the next best move in this scenario is finding a rookie that can at least play better relative to their salary than a vet would.

That could be what is happening with the Buccaneers and Ryan Succop.

Succop is a decent piece for the Bucs and was a huge part of the Super Bowl run a year ago, but the writing is on the wall for the special teams unit; the group is getting younger and cheaper.

There could be two new special teams captains in Tampa in 2022, and one of the two from 2021 is already set to be off the team.

The Bucs don’t take a punter in the fourth round if they still see any way for Bradley Pinion to contribute in 2022. And while the Bucs didn’t spend a valuable pick on a kicker to replace Succop, Jose Borregales is sitting right there with a much cheaper contract and arguably a better leg.

This move would free up some space, bring in someone with a bit more upside at the position, and would even give Rachaad White a chance to wear his college number. Number three would look pretty damn good on a running back that athletic.

From taking young guys like Grant Stuard to drafting a punter, the Bucs are correctly seeing that more expensive veteran options actually aren’t the way to improve one of the worst special teams units in the league.

At this point, youth appears to be the focus for this front office on this side of the ball, and that could be bad news for the best Bucs kicker in years.
