Buccaneers smartly connected to perfect offensive free agent fit
By Rob Leeds
The Buccaneers can never turn down help on the offensive side of the ball. This proposed fit works for a variety of reasons.
The offseason is always going to be a time of rampant speculation. This is especially true if you are a team like the Buccaneers with Tom Brady at quarterback.
It feels like the Bucs are always connected to the best of the best when free agency hits due to the current status of the team, and that is an excellent change of pace over what we have dealt with in the past.
In the most recent round of this speculation, the Bucs were connected to free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. by Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports.
This is a far better fit than the cynical fans who don’t like Beckham “due to his personality” would have you believe.
As it stands, OBJ is recovering from an injury he sustained en route to winning the Super Bowl with the Rams. While no one should bet on Beckham playing at the start of the season, he should be available right when Tom Brady and the Bucs need him the most.
Like anyone who has watched this Buccaneers team for a full season can tell you, the wide receiver injuries always pick up towards the end of the year. The Bucs lost starters at various points during 2020 and lost two of their starters for the playoffs in 2021.
The Bucs don’t look like they are going to get busy at the position in free agency anytime soon. That should leave them with the money and the eventual need to make OBJ a legitimate fit towards the end of the season.
Even if the Buccaneers are able to stay healthy, adding in Beckham to a very top-heavy wide receiver room is far from a bad move. Tampa is going to want as many established bodies around Tom Brady as possible. This light deal and the need for the Bucs could make this an easy decision even before Odell Beckham Jr. returns from his injury.
The fit should be there, and then the Bucs will get to add yet another star to a team that feels like they always have big-names coming in.
