The Buccaneers have all but solidified their wide receiver depth chart for the 2022 season by bringing Julio Jones into the fold.
Well, the Buccaneers have decided to up the arms race for the 2023 Super Bowl by going out and signing the best free agent left on the market.
Julio Jones is coming to Tampa. The Bucs are making a statement that they will do anything and everything in their power to set Tom Brady and the offense up to win a Super Bowl.
Another wide receiver helps the team as a whole. However, it might hurt the job hopes for a few individual players.
The wide receiver depth chart is all but set in stone now. Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Russell Gage, and Julio Jones are the obvious starters. There is a great chance that the Bucs smartly start to rely on more four-receiver sets.
Outside of this group is where there are some small questions but not many.
Tyler Johnson and Jaelon Darden should also be locks, bringing the total up to six. There really isn’t much space remaining outside of that six, although the Buccaneers could take one more guy to help shoulder return duties.
Scotty Miller is on the hot seat. Breshad Perriman likely gets cut. Even Cyril Grayson may be on his way out after flashing plenty of upside at the end of last season. One of these three guys could make the team, but no one should bet on it now.
The Bucs don’t need more than seven receivers. Keeping four tight ends could make that an impossibility, but Ko Kieft getting cut could give the Bucs some more flexibility in this area.
Still, cuts are coming, and these cuts are almost assuredly going to be to players that fans on social media “still like their upside.”
The Bucs got better, that’s all that matters. When the cuts inevitably come, no one should shed any tears.
