The Buccaneers have one of the best wide receiver rooms in the NFL by a healthy margin. Russell Gage should play a huge role in the unit this year.

Despite the plethora of talent of the offensive side of the ball for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, consistent success in football, and sports in general, have a funny way of coming down to the performance of the small role player guys.

While players such as Tom Brady, Mike Evans, and Leonard Fournette will surely get their huge stats they always seem to, it doesn’t take a historian to realize that the Bucs need big performances from their other players if they want to recreate their Super Bowl-winning season.

It was just last year the it seemed like the entire Buccaneers offense was injured and Brady was forced to throw to what appeared to be athletic fans pulled out of the stands before the game. Despite the talent of their offense, they are injury-prone, so it’ll be the guys behind them that need to step up big this year.

One player who will be very important to the team’s success this year is the newly-acquired wide receiver, Russel Gage. While not as flashy a pickup as Julio Jones, Gage will more than likely get significant playing time this year if the historical injury trends of the team continue.

Gage is more than capable of putting together explosive games as he did on multiple occasions during his tenure with the Atlanta Falcons. Gage found success with a worse quarterback, offense, and coaching in Atlanta. Just think about what he can do in Tampa with real help.

While not the biggest or fastest guy on the field, Gage has shown a knack for getting open, and Brady has always shown he will find the open man. It should be no shock to Bucs fans this year when Gage has some big-time games, especially if the Bucs have some injury issues on the offensive side of the ball.

Hopefully Gage is ready for those opportunities, because they could very well mean the difference between wins and losses for a team competing for another super bowl championship.
