It seemed like the Buccaneers could finally get some proof that Jose Borregales was their guy going forward. Last night was a mixed bag.

We are all in on Jose Borregales being the next kicker for the Buccaneers. Last night wasn’t great for our cause.

The kicker position battle has been much closer than most would care to believe. Ryan Succop has the history and has looked really sharp in camp, but Borregales offers a cheaper option that could bring all of the upside down the road.

Every kick matters in a battle like this, and while the young kicker was able to hit an impressive field goal earlier in the game, a game-losing doink likely puts Succop in the driver’s seat for the battle going forward.

The Bucs are obviously doing everything in their power to ensure that they have the best kicker on the field while not spending any money unnecessarily. You don’t want to give too much money to a guy that can’t play up to his price tag, but you also don’t want to get too excited about a young kicker and then have another Roberto Aguayo situation.

This is the reason why these preseason kicking competitions are so important.

If the race was close before last night, the game-losing miss likely ensures that this isn’t the case as of today.

The good news for Borregales is that this is something that can shift on a  practice-by-practice basis. The battle isn’t over yet, and Succop is one bad miss in his chances away from coming right back down to the rest of the back.

As much as we like the young kicker and what he could bring, the veteran likely doesn’t miss that kick, and that is why Succop should still be the K1 for right now.
