The Buccaneers may not need a veteran pass rusher after all

Let’s move onto the defense.

The defensive showing was largely hit or miss for the Bucs last night, but a couple of returners did stand out.

The pass-rushing duo of Anthony Nelson and Cam Gill looked stout. Nelson was already starting to show some upside towards the end of last season, so his dominance wasn’t a shock. Gill was a bit of a different story.

Gill hasn’t been bad in his limited chances, but has he been good enough to step into that third role if Shaquil Barrett or Joe Tryon-Shoyinka get hurt? The answer to that was a bit more ambiguous before last night.

Gill made it clear that the Bucs have made the right decision by not looking at the position just yet. The young pass rusher was all over the field and pitched a tent in the backfield before he left the game with a injury.

This type of performance was exactly what the Buccaneers needed to see to have confidence in their decision to put their trust in Gill. It looks like they should keep doing that if they keep getting plays like they saw last night.
