Cam Gill was a breakout start for the Buccaneers in their game against the Dolphins. An injury could mean that the Bucs need to replace him for now.

The first preseason game for the Buccaneers was a costly one in some ways.

Injuries are a part of the sport, but guys like Giovani Bernard and Grant Stuard leaving the game early after only a few series is not a great showing for a team that is already struggling with this aspect of the game.

Another guy that ended up leaving the game was breakout defensive star Cam Gill. Gill is currently slated to be the fourth edge rusher for the Bucs in their upcoming Super Bowl campaign. Hopefully his injury doesn’t keep him off the field for long.

While there is still some time to get the young defender back to full strength, the Buccaneers need to start preparing for the possibility that they could be without a key depth defender for the start of the season. This should force the team to get busy on the free agent market.

Not that it should surprise anyone here, but Carl Nassib is still the best option for the Bucs if they need a fourth guy that isn’t going to rock the boat.

Nassib already has experience playing in Tampa, would come on a deal that would be near the veteran minimum, and he has been well-liked at every team he has been with. The Bucs would get another veteran at a position that already needs it, and Nassib wouldn’t be a terrible fifth edge rusher to carry if the team really wants to hedge its bets.

It makes sense that the Buccaneers would like to see the true extent of Gill’s injuries before they make any moves, but putting some feelers out to Nassib’s camp wouldn’t be a bad idea if the team wants to be as safe as possible.
