Two years of watching Tom Brady with the Buccaneers has shown us that the third wide receiver is going to feast. This is good news for Julio Jones.
It was already this case before the Russell Gage injury, but Julio Jones is officially looking like a clear WR3 for Tom Brady to utilize at will in search of his eighth Super Bowl victory (second with the Buccaneers).
This is a crazy notion to think about a player winning so many rings, but it becomes less crazy when you look at the weapons that follow Brady wherever he goes.
Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are already one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL. Adding in a guy like Jones is simply unfair.
The third wide receiver has proven to be one of the most important during the Brady tenure. The owner of this role has passed around a little bit, but the most notable guy in this spot was Antonio Brown.
The results did not disappoint. The end of Brown’s football career might distract some from what happened on the field, but 15 games in the regular season with just seven starts over two years led to 1,028 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. When you add in the 81 receiving yards and two crucial touchdowns in the playoffs, you have a guy that was a huge part of Tampa’s success during their Super Bowl run.
Julio Jones is in the same position with even more chances to make it on the field with injuries to Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, making their immediate future uncertain. When you see that Jones looks healthy for the first time in a while and has never been a distraction in the locker room, you have a recipe for incredible success.
It is also worth noting that Jones is going to get some of the best looks of his life with so many additional weapons on the Buccaneer offense. Defenses simply won’t be able to game plan for all the guys Tom Brady can lean on at any given moment, and this should lead to an extremely productive season for the veteran receiver and the Hall of Fame quarterback.
Brady likes that third-option guy as much as his starters. Sign this writer up for Julio Jones over 1,000 receiving yards on the season.
