Buccaneers make quality signing with chance to make roster
By Rob Leeds
The Buccaneers might have a lot of difficult cuts coming up, but adding a few proven names ahead of these decisions is never a bad idea.
Proven names are usually better than young faces in situations where a team is in the hunt for a Super Bowl. The Buccaneers have to win in 2022. The roster looks good right now, but you can never be complacent when you have one last year of major relevance coming up.
The Bucs need to make sure that they have a winner now. A rebuild is coming one way or another, and sacrificing some youth today for a win in the only game that matters should be seen as a worthwhile decision.
This brings us to the most recent signing for the Buccaneers.
Linebacker Genard Avery is the new name coming to Tampa with the hopes of making a very competitive roster.
The Bucs might like what they have at the linebacker position, especially after going out and signing Carl Nassib to be a great depth option, but five outside linebackers is still common on a team like this.
The Bucs did already seem like they had the ability to roster five outside linebackers ahead of time, especially with guys that could play a decent chunk of special teams reps, and the losses on the offensive line could make this all the more likely.
Avery shouldn’t feel like a long-shot to make the roster. He has experience in the NFL, some production, and he fits exactly what the Buccaneers need to make the most of a guy that won’t get a ton of reps on defense.
The final preseason game will tell us plenty. Buccaneers fans should definitely keep an eye on their team’s newest defensive signing.
