Buccaneers make the right decision with young wide receiver
By Rob Leeds
Jerreth Sterns might still have a bright future in the NFL, but it doesn’t look like that future is going to come on the Buccaneers.
The tough cuts were coming for the Buccaneers.
The wide receiver position was always going to be the one hit the hardest. Whether it was with the veterans or the young guys with tons of future upside, the Bucs just didn’t have the room for what they were dealing with.
That is why Tampa made the decision to cut the most productive football player in college from last season.
Jerreth Sterns was always going to be a long shot. There aren’t a lot of undrafted wide receivers that wouldn’t be in a wide receiver room that has Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Julio Jones, Russell Gage, and three established guys that are still on rookie deals.
Sterns might have shown heart and done well to prove that he can still be an NFL wide receiver, but it doesn’t look like that is going to happen on the active roster for the Bucs in 2022.
The Bucs could still get lucky and find Sterns on their practice squad if the cards fall in the right way, but even that seems unlikely based on the need at the position across the NFL.
Even with all of that in mind, the Buccaneers made the right decision.
Sterns is not the player right now that Scotty Miller, Tyler Johnson, and Jaelon Darden are. While his future could be brighter, that is just too much of a risk to bank on when you are in win-now mode.
The Bucs might not be making a move with their future in mind, but focusing on winning in 2022 is all that matters right now.
