Buccaneers need to make simple decision with Chris Godwin
By Rob Leeds
With Chris Godwin as the only question mark for the Buccaneers against the Cowboys on Sunday, a simple decision comes to mind.
The Buccaneers have a tough game coming up on Sunday, but it isn’t going to be as difficult as the ones that are coming over the following four weeks.
The Dallas Cowboys have an offense that can largely score points at will, a secondary that can force turnovers, and a very good pass rush that should create trouble for this newer offensive line.
Still, even when looking at the talent that the Cowboys bring to the table, a simple decision remains when looking at what to do with Chris Godwin:
Don’t play him.
The Bucs making this decision would make Godwin one of only two players that is going to miss this game due to an injury, joining rookie defensive back Zyon McCollum, and that should show just how much leeway the team has here.
Being down one wide receiver, even one of the best ones on the team, should not be enough to change this game from a win to a loss for Tampa. Godwin helps, but does anyone really believe that Julio Jones, Russell Gage, and Scotty Miller aren’t up to the task of splitting reps alongside Mike Evans?
The benefits of winning the game, which are already low with Godwin almost assuredly being on a pitch count, don’t outweigh the negatives of potentially losing Godwin for another season if he comes back too soon.
If it isn’t clear enough yet for the Buccaneers or Godwin to make a decision, then that in and of itself should be enough for them to decide.
The Bucs don’t need Chris Godwin to win on Sunday, but they might need him for down the road if they are going to be in a position to compete for a deep playoff spot.
