Tough offensive pill Buccaneers fans need to swallow

The Buccaneers have three offensive touchdowns through the first three games. Fans can scream 2-1 all they want; no Tom Brady offense has ever done that.

Before we get too deep into this, Byron Leftwich deserves to keep his job. No one should ever be silly enough to call for something like that. But it is fair to ask questions when Tom Brady is off to the worst offensive start of his career with this Buccaneers team.

The Bucs are certainly short in a few key areas, but again, is the worst offensive start in the history of the greatest player of the sport not worth worrying over?

The Bucs scored 61 offensive touchdowns in 2021 and 58 in 2020. They are currently on pace to score 17 total touchdowns in 2022. You read that right.

Receivers are out, offensive linemen are out, and Brady is playing without his all-time favorite target, but three offensive touchdowns in three games is absolutely insanity.

One of the best offenses in the NFL over the past two seasons has been reduced to one of the least-effective in the league. Tampa would have to average more than four touchdowns per game for the rest of the season just to get back to their 2021 numbers, yet that seems impossible in and of itself.

This offense is broken. From play calling to catching to blocking schemes, the Bucs moving away from no risk it no biscuit has reduced one of the scariest teams in the NFL into one that can’t seem to move the ball effectively against anyone.

The Scotty Miller that thrived in the Bruce Arians-led offense can’t do anything but drop passes. There isn’t a tight end on the roster that is a shadow of Rob Gronkowski. The offensive line is already letting Brady get sacked at an alarming rate.

The “don’t worry” crowd is naive. This is absolutely a time for worry, but it can still turn around if drastic changes are made.

Thank goodness the defense is likely the best in the NFL. We’ll see how long that can keep this ship afloat.
