Buccaneers don’t need to trade for struggling position
By Rob Leeds
The Buccaneers have a lot of positions that are struggling. Fans want the team to make some moves via trades, but they need to avoid running backs.
One has to assume that the Buccaneers will be buyers at the trade deadline based on Tom Brady being the quarterback. No team with Brady is ever out of the hunt.
If the Bucs can make it to the playoffs, every game becomes a coin flip when the rubber meets the road. That is why the team should focus on making moves to keep the roster as prepared as possible for that likely outcome in such a bad NFC South.
There are plenty of trades for the Bucs to consider. Running back should not be in those considerations.
Now, the Bucs have been downright bad on the ground this season. Attempts and average per attempt numbers have been brutal, but none of that means a new face would shake things up.
The Buccaneers are trying to run behind a bad offensive line (from a run-blocking standpoint) and are employing one of the worst offensive coordinators in the league. A new running back won’t get Byron Leftwich out of here faster and it won’t cause the line to start blocking better.
Fournette and Rachaad White are fine for a team like he Bucs that is in the hunt for the playoffs. If you put these two behind a quality line with a competent coordinator then they would be on pace for 1,500 yards on the ground this season.
Again, there are just too many other areas of need for the Buccaneers to go out and give up draft capital for a position that matters little in the grand scheme of things in the modern NFL. If the Bucs want to make some trades, they need to look at other positions.
