The Buccaneers need to just rip the band-aid off and make their run game better. The should start with breaking some tough news to Leonard Fournette.
The Buccaneers are going to need some dramatic changes in their run game soon. The fact that this method of attack has been one of the worst in the history of the league is greatly alarming, and the added fact that coaching staff wants to keep the ball on the ground so much does not mix well.
Based on what we have seen, no one should expect the Bucs to do the obvious thing and let the pass be how they fix their running woes; that would just make too much sense.
Instead, the Buccaneers can fix their rushing attack in part by making a small positional change, and they probably need to make this change sooner rather than later.
The first way to fix the run game (that the Bucs would and could actually do) is move Rachaad White into a start role. One back change isn’t going to completely change anything, but it is a step in the right direction.
He may not know it yet, but Leonard Fournette is not the best running back on the Buccaneers. The reps and touches may make it seem like the veteran back is, but this season has shown us a mountain of cracks in Fournette’s game, cracks that don’t exist in White’s.
Tampa needs a guy in the starting role that can catch, block, and use vision to get through crowded rushing lanes. Fournette just isn’t that guy right now.
It might be a tough pill to swallow and could lead to some uneasiness in the Buccaneers locker room, but the team needs to make it clear where Rachaad White and Leonard Fournette stand.
