Buccaneers have difficult decision coming up with veteran
By Rob Leeds
As Buccaneers legend Lavonte David nears free agency again, the team has a difficult decision to make about their mutual future.
The NFL is a business. This is one of the hardest aspects of the sport to acknowledge. Good players get cut all the time. Fan favorites leave. People have to make decisions that help them the most above anyone else, and that is why the coming months are likely going to be rather difficult for the Buccaneers and legend Lavonte David.
David is a lock for the Ring of Honor and should have a healthy bit of buzz with the Hall of Fame. It might take a few more years and maybe another Super Bowl ring, but the veteran linebacker isn’t that far off.
After years of loyalty to the Bucs and some excellent play, we are once again approaching the scary situation that is Lavonte David free agency.
Are the Bucs going to re-sign the aging vet? Does he still want to play in Tampa? Can the two sides find a mutual position going forward?
These are all questions that don’t have clear answers.
The Bucs don’t have much cap space coming up as they have a ton of talented young players to lock down for the future. In addition, Devin White is approaching a payday, so can the Bucs afford to pay so much money to two off-ball linebackers? Most teams can’t, and that isn’t mentioning the All-Pro at right tackle or the safety.
David playing for a cheaper deal is what this will all come down to. It won’t be easy without a major reduction from David’s end, and no one really knows if he is going to be willing to meet this demand.
The coming months will be very telling.
