Buccaneers still need expensive free agent to step up
By Rob Leeds
Getting Russell Gage was one of the highlights of the offseason for the Buccaneers. It would be nice if that signing started to pan out.
After the hype that was created during the offseason about the signing, it is rather surprising that Buccaneers wide receiver Russell Gage is off to the worst start of his young career. Injuries and a very deep depth role have hurt his prospects some, but even those excuses don’t make up for what we have seen.
Gage currently has 29 receptions for 231 yards and one touchdown on the season. This is probably not what most people expected when this deal was initially announced.
Now, being the third or fourth guy behind Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Julio Jones is a tough, but even players like Scotty Miller were able to make their presence known in the past while in the fourth role.
There isn’t much of another way to say it; Russell Gage has been a bit of a disappointment during his time in pewter and red.
The same can be said for most of the team, and this is not based in the desire to pile on a player that is quite good, but the Bucs do need for their guys to step up when the team is playing so poorly, and Russell Gage is absolutely one of the guys.
The good news is that there is still a lot of season left to play and Gage will get plenty of chances to show why Tom Brady went out of his way to bring the young receiver to Tampa, we would just like to see that happen sooner rather than later.
Our money is on it happening, the volume just has to be there.
