Buccaneers need to keep close eye on emerging future option
By Rob Leeds
The Buccaneers are going to have a major mess to clean up after Tom Brady finally moves on. The next starting quarterback is probably going to surprise people.
Life is going to be impossible to predict for the Buccaneers after Tom Brady retires. Where the team goes after playing with the best quarterback of all time is beyond anyone at this point, but it is fair to say that big changes could be coming soon.
It feels like a stretch to assume Brady will return after the season the Bucs are putting together. If that’s the case, the Buccaneers coaches will need to scramble to find a new quarterback.
Blaine Gabbert and Kyle Trask are the two quarterbacks that are on the roster right now that the coaching staff has expressed some confidence in, but are these really the two guys that Todd Bowles will want to gamble his job on in year two after disappointing in year one?
That feels like a gamble that won’t pay off for a variety of reasons.
Instead, it is fair to say that the Bucs will look to the draft and a bridge quarterback to buy some time for the staff, and that could have the team looking at everyone from Jacoby Brissett to Baker Mayfield.
Yes, somehow Baker Mayfield is making a comeback in the minds of some sports fans.
It was just one game, but there are about to be a lot of people keeping a close eye on Mayfield over the final stretch of the season as they try to evaluate if he will be a fit with their team, and while Bucs fans probably won’t like it, the team should probably try to keep its options as open as possible.
It might not be the flashiest option or the most fun one, but it is hard to say that the Bucs can safely rule anyone out as they try to undergo one of the most difficult transitions in sports.
