Buccaneers unlikely to lean into poor quarterback fit
By Rob Leeds
As the Buccaneers try to solidify their future after Tom Brady, don’t hold your breath on the team shifting to Blaine Gabbert as the face of the franchise.
If quarterback is arguably the most important and impactful positions in all of sports, why on earth would any team ever be okay having a mediocre option in the driver seat when there are other avenues to finding a better fit? This is what is happening with the Buccaneers.
The Bucs are soon to be without Tom Brady. No one on the planet should expect for Tom Brady to come back after this season. That will then leave the team (and likely Todd Bowles, who should be on the hot seat) with a difficult job ahead.
If Bowles is trying to keep his job, he needs to find a new leader of this team that can maximize the potential of this team while also building for the future.
That player certainly isn’t Blaine Gabbert, even if some Bucs fans and some coaches believe otherwise.
Gabbert doesn’t have the talent to win in the short term, and at 33 years old, Gabbert isn’t going to be a long-term option for this team either.
If the situation were different and Bruce Arians was still the coach, a move like this would be one thing. A successful head coaching trying one more deep shot as a heat check isn’t completely out of the question, especially if you are trying to prove yourself.
Bowles doesn’t have the slack to make a move like this or the talent to make the most of a quarterback like Gabbert. Try as they might, the people that try to push the narrative that this makes sense can’t believe it either.
The Buccaneers will need to find someone else to be the next face of their franchise.
