Baker Mayfield and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are officially on the clock.

Training camp is just a week away, meaning it’s crunch time for the organization in their quest to re-sign Mayfield ahead of his contract year.  

While there’s an argument to be made for the Bucs letting this season play out and making Mayfield earn a major commitment as the franchise quarterback, it actually makes more sense to get a deal done now and put this contract saga to an end.

Bucaneers can avoid competing with other teams in free agency 

As things stand now, Mayfield is the best quarterback available in next offseason’s free agency period by a wide margin.

There are teams looking to add quarterbacks every year, and Mayfield could command a robust market as a result. 

The Bucs don’t want to get into a bidding war and end up spending more than Mayfield is asking for right now. Plus, if they decide to use the franchise tag to keep him off the market, it’s estimated to cost $50 million.

Mayfield is going to earn a significant payday one way or another. It’s better for the Buccaneers to figure things out now and avoid allowing other suitors into the equation. 

Eliminate season-long distraction  

If Mayfield is forced to play out his contract year, it will become a recurring storyline throughout the season. 

Every game will become a contract discussion. After his best performances, the conversation will be about his impending free agency market and how much more expensive he’s becoming. 

After poor outings, questions will surface about whether he’s worth a long-term commitment. 

While the distraction might not impact the locker room, it will certainly be the biggest story in the media and dominate the discussion surrounding the Buccaneers. 

Tampa Bay is better off nipping this in the bud and letting their franchise quarterback, and the team as a whole, play out the season without a contract at the forefront of everyone’s mind. 

Peace of mind for Baker Mayfield 

Mayfield is known for his physical, win-at-all-costs playing style. 

It’s gotten him into some trouble with injuries, but it’s also ignited the team and helped him win over the locker room and fanbase. Having a quarterback that is willing to put his body on the line for a win every Sunday is a luxury very few teams have.

But with free agency hanging in the balance, and millions of dollars at stake, Mayfield could subconsciously play more cautiously, as an injury could be catastrophic to his market value.

The Bucs could eliminate that uncertainty by giving Mayfield long-term security, allowing their franchise quarterback to play his fearless brand of football without worrying what a bad hit or injury could mean for his future.
