For 12 years, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were lucky enough to witness Mike Evans’ greatness firsthand. Now, the San Francisco 49ers are finding out what Bucs fans have known all along.
Evans joined the 49ers in free agency during the offseason, and it didn’t take long for him to become a fan favorite in his new home. He’s made an immediate impact in San Francisco, quickly establishing himself as quarterback Brock Purdy’s No. 1 target.
In Week 5, the 49ers were counting on Evans to deliver in a pivotal matchup against their NFC West rivals, the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. With major playoff implications on the line, Evans did what the Buccaneers watched him to do for more than a decade: come through for his team when it matters most.
San Francisco 49ers are getting a taste of Mike Evans’ greatness
Evans recorded seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown, and even caught a clutch two-point conversion attempt, despite playing through two broken ribs. He and Purdy are firing on all cylinders as San Francisco sits at 5-0 and looks like the best team in the NFL.

It’s a bittersweet moment for Bucs fans, as Evans is the talk of the football world and reminding everyone why he’s a future Hall of Famer, but it’s no longer happening in Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers really miss his contributions both on the field but also in the locker room.
But Evans wanted to compete for a Super Bowl in the final years of his career, and as the Bucs sit at 1-4, it’s evident that San Francisco gave him a better shot at accomplishing that goal.
Through five games with the 49ers, he’s recorded 17 receptions for 213 yards and two touchdowns. That puts him on a full-season pace for 82 catches, 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Despite being in the later stages of his career, it’s clear that Evans hasn’t lost a step. He’s still a true WR1 and is utterly dominant when being utilized properly, as he is in San Francisco.
Buccaneers fans are watching the 49ers and their fanbase fall in love with Evans the same way they did over the past 12 years. His teammates and coaches have been blown away by what he’s brought to San Francisco, but that’s nothing new for anyone who watched his career unfold in Tampa Bay.

Evans has always been the gold standard, both on and off the field, and now an entirely new organization is finding that out for itself.
