Before becoming the general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, John Lynch enjoyed a Hall of Fame playing career.

He spent 11 seasons in Tampa Bay and won a Super Bowl before the Buccaneers made the difficult decision to release him in an effort to get younger and clear cap space.

Now, Mike Evans could be staring at a similar crossroads.

After 12 seasons in Tampa Bay that included a Super Bowl victory, Evans must decide whether to sign an extension and remain a Buccaneer for life or finish his career wearing another uniform.

In Lynch’s case, he signed with the Denver Broncos and closed his career on a high note. Over four seasons in Denver, he recorded seven sacks, nine forced fumbles, three interceptions and three defensive touchdowns. By the time he retired, Lynch was a legend in both cities and eventually became a Ring of Honor inductee for both franchises.

John Lynch's post-Bucs success could be the blueprint for Mike Evans

Few players better illustrate that success doesn’t have to end when a Tampa Bay chapter closes than Lynch. That reality alone makes the 49ers a legitimate threat to lure Evans in free agency.

The 49ers have already been reported to have strong interest in signing Evans this offseason. The team moved on from Deebo Samuel just a year ago, and it sure seems like Brandon Aiyuk won't play another down in San Francisco. That leaves a major hole at wide receiver, and an opportunity for Evans to step in as the focal point of the offense.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Evans is prioritizing a quarterback he believes in, a chance to compete for a Super Bowl, a top-tier play caller and a high-volume role. The 49ers check every box.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan is one of the league's most respected offensive minds. San Francisco has appeared in three of the last five NFC Championship Games, including a Super Bowl berth. Quarterback Brock Purdy has proven capable of operating the system at a high level. And with limited established depth at wide receiver, Evans would have every opportunity to command the target share he desires.

All of this is tied together by the fact that the man who will be recruiting him and making the free agency pitch has been down this road before.

If Evans is looking for proof that he can move on to chase another ring without diminishing the legacy he built in Tampa Bay, he won’t have to look farther than right across the negotiating table.

The 49ers present one of the most serious threats to pry Evans away this offseason, and the Buccaneers will have their work cut out for them if they want to keep their franchise icon.
