History was made on Sunday in Tampa Bay in more than one way.
All the Tampa Bay Buccaneers needed to do was beat the New Orleans Saints and they'd clinch a fourth straight NFC South title. It wasn't easy, just like everything else this season, but the Bucs got the job done and are now headed to the playoffs for a fifth consecutive season.
Since realignment, only the Packers, Eagles, and Seahawks have made the playoffs in five or more consecutive seasons with Green Bay holding the record at eight. The Bucs join Philly and Seattle as teams who have made it five straight years and in doing so set a new franchise record for success.
The best stretch in franchise history was between 1999 and 2002 when the Bucs reached the playoffs four straight seasons, culminating in a Super Bowl title. This trip to the playoffs surpasses that and sets a new record, which is something Mike Evans is hoping to continue next year.
A history-making streak is something Evans has been on since he arrived in the league back in 2014. He's reached 1,000 yards in 11 straight seasons, with the most recent needing the final play of the year to get him across the mark.
It was added drama on Sunday that Bucs fans went down to the wire wondering if it would happen -- and they weren't the only ones feeling anxious about it.
Baker Mayfield had a hilarious quote about Mike Evans nearly missing out on 1,000 yards
With just a few minutes left in the game on Sunday, Bucky Irving scored rather than going down before the goal line near the end of the game. It was a play that seemingly locked the game up but might have also boxed Evans out of keeping his historic streak alive.
At the time Evans needed just five more yards to cross the 1,000 yard mark, but Irving scoring put the game away and meant the Bucs wouldn't be passing anymore. It was something Baker was very aware of as it was happening.
While speaking to the media after the game, Baker Mayfield dropped a hilarious line when asked about what he was thinking when Bucky scored.
"Sh-t. We won the game, great, but now I'm gonna be the guy who didn't get [Mike Evans] to 1,000 yards. Now he's going to have to play 11 more years," Baker joked.
Luckily we all know what happened next.
The Bucs defense got the ball back and dialed up a risky pass play to help Evans keep his streak alive. It was an incredibly cool moment, one that shows just how tight-knit the team is from top to bottom; Todd Bowles green-lit the play, Liam Coen called it, and everyone on the sideline went nuts when Evans caught the ball.
Evans ties Jerry Rice's all-time record for consecutive seasons with 1,000 yards and can claim a piece of history if he does it again next year. Given how high-powered Tampa Bay's offense has been, the chances seem pretty good that if Evans stays healthy he'll hit the mark and set a new record.
How the streak remained alive makes it even more epic.
It's precisely the right vibes the Bucs need as they head into the playoffs. Most of the game against New Orleans was forgettable, or at worst actively harmful, but having the season end with Evans getting to 1,000 yards and Baker being in a joking mood is perfection.
