Baker Mayfield hilariously roasted himself after Buccaneers overtime win in Week 13
By Josh Hill
Four weeks ago, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost an overtime heartbreaker to the Kansas City Chiefs, but the team proved it had learned from its mistakes on Sunday night. A third overtime loss this season wouldn't come to pass, as the Bucs managed to eke out a win over the Carolina Panthers that snapped a free football losing streak.
It took everything they had, but the Bucs forced a huge turnover in overtime and marched down the field for a game-winning field goal. The win helps Tampa Bay capitalize on the Falcons' loss earlier in the day, as just a single game separates the two teams in the NFC South standings after this weekend.
Technically, they're tied at 6-6, but Atlanta's outright tiebreaker over Tampa Bay is the difference right now. The Falcons have a tough matchup against the Minnesota Vikings next week, while the Bucs get a game against the Las Vegas Raiders, which could mean the standings flip just a few weeks into December.
Winning on Sunday in Charlotte is why the Bucs are in this position, and after the game Baker dropped a hilarious line that showed the vibes are loose in the locker room.
Baker Mayfield trolled himself after Buccaneers overtime win over Panthers
That loss to the Chiefs in overtime was preceded by Baker going out and losing the coin toss. It's something that happened a few weeks prior in Atlanta, where the Bucs also lost a heartbreaker in overtime.
This time around the Bucs sent out defensive captain Lavonte David for the coin toss, which Tampa Bay won. It's a difference that Baker joked about when talking to the media after the game when asked what he thought about how overtime went.
"I think we found [that] the recipe for success in overtime is I don't do the coin toss," Mayfield joked.
That's the Baker we've come to know and love over the last two years, but it also shows that despite how tense the game was the vibes in the locker room are still loose. It almost wasn't the case based on how things went earlier in the game, as the Bucs looked like a shell of the team we saw last Sunday against the Giants and was hardly the team we know they're capable of being.
Dumb mistakes and stupid penalties held the team back, and some bad decisions by Baker ended up gifting the Panthers some points. Tampa Bay got lucky too, with as many as six points left on the field by Carolina after missed field goals, and Dave Canales' decision to not go for two points after a late Adam Thielen touchdown helped the Bucs force overtime.
Todd Bowles earned a stay of execution, as he'd have been fully thrust upon the hot seat with a loss. It was his defense that broke down on the final offensive drive of regulation for Carolina and nearly cost Tampa Bay the game and its season.
Luckily things worked out in overtime, and while fans are still trying to sort out how they feel about what happened it's clear the Bucs locker room is in a fantastic place.
