Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker  Mayfield may be sidelined with an injury, but that hasn’t stopped him from being the ultimate leader and doing everything he can to help undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels shine in his place.

Daniels was thrown into the fire, becoming the starting quarterback for an 0-3 Buccaneers team with its season already hanging in the balance.

For a rookie who went from an undrafted free agent to a starting NFL quarterback in a matter of weeks, having a veteran like Mayfield in his corner is invaluable. It kills Baker that he can’t lead the Bucs on the field right now, but he’s still making his presence felt by ensuring Daniels doesn’t have to navigate this opportunity alone.

Baker Mayfield is proving he’s the ultimate leader for the Buccaneers

If being thrust into the starting role wasn’t challenging enough, Daniels had to do it all over again on a short week with only four days between his first and second career starts. He credits Mayfield with helping him prepare for the challenge.

“I don’t know what else I can ask from Baker. I think that he’s been heavily in tune with everything trying to continue to help me prepare for every single situation. Whether it’s as we go through the week of practice or if we’re talking about just on the sideline. Being able to have Baker in my corner, being able to know that I can talk to him about literally anything. Being able to ask him any question has been great for me…”

Daniels had an up-and-down NFL debut, but he bounced back on Thursday Night Football and led the Buccaneers to their first win of the season on the road against the Dallas Cowboys.

He finished an efficient 17-of-25 for 189 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 23 yards. In his postgame interview, he once again credited Mayfield for helping him navigate his new role.

“The camaraderie that I have with Baker, the communication that I’m able to have with him on a daily basis. In the game, in the practice, in the film room. No matter where we’re at I’m able to have that transparent conversation with Bake, and I can’t thank Baker enough."

Mayfield’s leadership was even visible during the game. During a timeout, cameras caught him talking to Daniels and coaching him up before sending the rookie back onto the field.

The Buccaneers are fortunate to have a leader like Mayfield as their franchise quarterback. Even when injured, he’s doing everything he can to provide support for the next man up and give his team the chance to succeed. It’s no wonder why this locker room would go to war for Mayfield. He’s the unquestioned leader of the Buccaneers.
