The biggest current storyline for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is the status of quarterback Baker Mayfield’s contract extension.
It felt like a foregone conclusion that he’d eventually be re-signed, with the organization making it clear all offseason they’re all-in on him as their franchise quarterback.
But recent comments from Mayfield just made it clear that he and the Buccaneers are actually not close on agreeing to a deal, and the front office is officially on notice.
Baker Mayfield just gave the Buccaneers a deadline for a contract extension
Mayfield spoke to the media for the first time since the start of OTAs, and his contract was the topic of discussion.

“The contract stuff - it’s happening it’s starting. Not anywhere close to what we were thinking. Would love to be here long term, but as of right now that’s not exactly the case.

“The contract stuff - it’s happening, it's starting. Not anywhere close to what we were thinking. Would love to be here long term, but as of right now that’s not exactly the case.," said Mayfield, via Pewter Report.
“I’m under contract for 2026. The guy’s in the locker room and that staff know that I’m still going to be me. I’m going to do everything I can to help this team win a Super Bowl. To me, that’s the priority. Everything else will take care of itself.”
Not only did Mayfield make it clear that he and the team are far apart on contract talks, but he set a firm deadline on when he’s going to cut off negotiations.!
“They know my deadline is as soon as training camp starts, we’re not doing any contract stuff. It’s all ball,” said Mayfield.
Training camp starts in late July, so the Buccaneers have about a month to figure out a deal with Mayfield, or he’ll be playing out his contract year and potentially become a free agent next offseason.
It’s a scenario Tampa Bay would certainly prefer to avoid, but if the two parties are truly that far apart on value, maybe it’s best for both sides to let the season play out and let the chips fall where they may.
