Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers started off their Wild Card matchup in a ho-hum fashion on Sunday night.

Taking on Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders, the Bucs were nearly held out of the end zone in the first half. Tampa Bay had scored just three points up until the waning seconds of the second quarter.

Offensively, the Bucs couldn't quite get into a rhythm. Penalties had been a killer at times, but otherwise, they really didn't have the opportunity to run many plays thanks to a lengthy Commanders drive smack dab in the middle of the first half.

But, after the Commanders went up 10-3 late in the second quarter, Mayfield and the Bucs offense got the ball back with less than two minutes to go and felt the urgency start to creep in. If they didn't get some points before halftime, there wasn't much of a reason to feel all that confident going into the locker room.

And then, on a 3rd-and-9 from their own 27-yard line, the Bucs saw their quarterback do something extraordinary.

This was the stuff of legends, folks.

Baker took off and went full Mike Alstott on Commanders linebacker and 6-time All Pro Bobby Wagner.

This will undoubtedly find itself as a top candidate on next week's "Angry Runs" segment on Good Morning Football.

Baker Mayfield may have single-handedly kept the Bucs in their playoff game with the Commanders

Now, I'm not saying this is the only play we're all going to look back on in this game but ... after that run, Baker went 4-for-4 on that drive for 44 passing yards and the game-tying touchdown pass to Mike Evans.

Clearly, that's the type of momentum shift these Buccaneers needed. And, Mayfield gave them the lift. Boy, did he ever.

More Bucs news:

The ground is an area we've seen Baker grow in, quite a bit, this season. Prior to the 2024 campaign, he hadn't surpassed 165 rushing yards in a season. But, this past regular season, Mayfield more than doubled that number and ended with 378.

He also averaged a career-high 6.3 yards per tote. So, seeing him take off like this wasn't anywhere close to a fluke for fans who have been paying attention. This is now a part of his game, and he's not afraid to take on some added contact.

Clearly, Baker has been every bit of the quarterback the Bucs had hoped he'd be after re-signing him to a long-term deal last offseason. He's taken his game to a whole different level, two straight years, and continues to ascend.
