Baker Mayfield reported for Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp today without a new contract extension from the team.
That means the deadline he set for a new deal has officially come and gone, and negotiations are expected to be put on hold until next offseason.

It’s a slippery slope for the Buccaneers, as Mayfield’s impending free agency will almost certainly become a recurring storyline throughout the season.
Tampa Bay now risks allowing other suitors to enter the bidding war in free agency, unless the Buccaneers opt to use the franchise tag, which is projected to cost around $50 million, per OverTheCap.
Any talks of a new contract for Baker Mayfield and the Bucs are finished, and he will play the 2026 season on his current expiring deal and the two sides will revisit things from there. Potentially a major free agent in March.

Mayfield now has everything on the line as he bets on himself entering a contract year. A down season or an injury could tank his value, but an elite-level season on par with his performance in 2024 could see his price tag skyrocket.
Through three seasons in Tampa Bay, Mayfield has led the Buccaneers to a 27-24 regular season record and a 1-2 postseason record. He’s thrown for over 12,000 yards along with 95 touchdowns while establishing himself as one of the NFL’s most productive quarterbacks since arriving in Tampa.
Both sides were adamant that they wanted to get a long-term deal done, and national insiders expressed confidence that an agreement would be reached, so it’s frustrating to see negotiations fall through. The Buccaneers still believe in Mayfield as their franchise quarterback, but they were apparently unwilling to meet his demands without seeing him perform at an elite level in 2026.
This stalemate could ultimately pay dividends for both sides in the long run. Mayfield has always played his best football with a chip on his shoulder, and now he has even more motivation to prove he’s worthy of a long-term commitment from the Buccaneers.
If this contract saga results in Mayfield delivering the best season of his career and leading Tampa Bay on a deep playoff run, the Bucs would gladly reward him with the lucrative contract extension he’s seeking next offseason.
