The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Atlanta Falcons 23-20 in a thrilling season opener, and while Emeka Egbuka and the offense received most of the headlines, the defense’s performance has flown under the radar.

It wasn’t a perfect effort on defense by any means — the Bucs let Atlanta score in just three plays and in under two minutes on the first drive of the season and also allowed them to march down the field with ease for a potential game-tying field goal late in the fourth quarter.

But according to the Falcons’ star player Bijan Robinson, Tampa Bay’s defensive game plan caught Atlanta off guard, and had them searching for answers.

"They came out in a look that we haven't seen," said Bijan Robinson. "Our playbook got shorter, and we were trying to run other plays to outscheme them. We prepared for something completely different. It wasn't about effort or anything like that. We were just outmatched in that game."

Robinson’s comments are telling, with him going as far to say that the Buccaneers came out in a new look that they weren’t prepared for, and ultimately outmatched the potent Falcons offense that eclipsed over 30 points against Tampa Bay in both matchups in 2024.

The statement reflects positively on Todd Bowles, living up to his reputation as a defensive guru. Straight from the source, Bowles outschemed the Falcons and forced them to adjust and divert from the offensive game plan that they had prepared for the season opener.

Bowles and the defensive unit’s success in Week 1 is a promising omen to kick off the 2025 season after such a disappointing year in 2024.

Week 2 will be another significant challenge, as Tampa Bay takes on the Houston Texans. In their last meeting in 2023, a 39-37 loss for the Buccaneers, C.J. Stroud set a new rookie record with 470 passing yards in a single game and tied the all-time rookie record with five touchdown passes.

If the defense can build on their momentum and do a better job limiting an explosive Texans offense, it would go a long way in helping Tampa Bay get off to a 2-0 start for the fifth consecutive season.
