It's hard to argue with what the Tampa Bay Buccaneers did in the NFL Draft this year. Adding wide receiver help in the first-round was a luxury it turns out the team could afford, with Jason Licht doubling up on cornerbacks and edge rushers on the other two days of the draft.
There's still work to be done, though.
Now that the draft is over, the Bucs head into the camp portion of the offseason with an overloaded roster in every sense. The team is bustling with talent, but Todd Bowles will only be able to bring with him so many spots into the season.
These next few months will be critical in figuring out who deserves to stick around and who might end up on the wrong side of camp cuts.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 53-man roster prediction
We already know a handful of spots are safe, but here's a look at what the final roster might look like when all is said and done in a few months.
Quarterback (3): Baker Mayfield, Kyle Trask, Michael Pratt
Running back (3): Bucky Irving, Rachaad White, Sean Tucker
Wide receiver (6): Mike Evans, Chis Godwin, Emeka Egbuka, Jalen McMillan, Trey Palmer, Tez Johnson
Tight end (4): Cade Otton, Payne Durham, Devin Culp, Ko Kieft
Offensive line (8): Tristan Wirfs, Luke Goedeke, Graham Barton, Cody Mauch, Ben Bredeson, Elijah Klein, Sua Opeta, Jake Majors
Defensive line (5): Vita Vea, Calijah Kancey, Logan Hall, Greg Gaines, Desmond Watson, Elijah Roberts
Linebacker (9): Lavonte David, Yaya Diaby, Haason Reddick, SirVocea Dennis, Anthony Nelson, Chris Braswell, Deion Jones, Anthony Walker, David Walker
Cornerback (7): Zyon McCollum, Jamel Dean, Benjamin Morrison, Jacob Parrish, Josh Hayes, Bryce Hall, Kindle Vildor
Safety (4): Antoine Winfield Jr., Tykee Smith, Christian Izien, Shilo Sanders, Kaevon Merriweather
Special teams (3): Chase McLaughlin (K), Riley Dixon (P), Evan Deckers (LS)
That's a super early look at how things might play out, but it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if this is the crew Tampa Bay takes into Week 1. A lot can change over the next few months, but right now it's looking like a few key storylines will garner a ton of attention as the roster begins to take shape.
Desmond Watson and Shilo Sanders make the final 53-man roster
Among the most notable names the Bucs added over NFL Draft weekend were defensive tackle Desmond Watson safety Shilo Sanders. Both are in positions where they could find themselves on the final roster if all goes well during camp.
Safety is a thin position for the Bucs, which means Sanders has an inside track to earning a spot as key depth behind Antoine Winfield Jr. and Tykee Smith. At the very least, he can make the roster as a special-teams guy, which means there might be more ways he makes the cut than ends up on the wrong side.
The same could go for Watson, the 464-pound 'Tush Push Terminator' who is already wanting to model his game after Vita Vea. Getting those two together on the defensive line feels like a potential cheat code, and it's something to keep an eye on as camp rolls on.
Cornerback and wide receiver are the tightest races of training camp
Tampa Bay bookended its draft by taking wide receivers, which puts even more pressure on a position room that was already crowded. Tampa Bay can carry six receivers into the season and still have about three who deserve roster spots, which shows how competitive things will be for the WR5 and WR6 roles this offseason.
The same goes for cornerback, where the Bucs doubled up with rookies Benjamin Morrison and Jacob Parrish. That could push someone like Kindle Vildor or Tyrek Funderburk to the edge, since the Bucs only carried 11 defensive backs into last season and are almost right up against that already with spoken for spots.
