The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are under a lot of pressure to perform in 2026. The team collapsed down the stretch last season after a 6-2 start and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

Head coach Todd Bowles is firmly on the hot seat, and quarterback Baker Mayfield is entering a contract year.

But apart from those obvious storylines, there’s quietly another factor that adds even more urgency for the Buccaneers.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers have one of the oldest rosters in the NFL

You wouldn’t think it with how much young talent is on the Bucs roster, but Tampa Bay has one of the oldest rosters in the NFL entering 2026.

According to a chart compiled by Ian Hartitz of Fantasy Life, the Bucs current roster age is 26.25 years old — the eighth-oldest in the league.

On offense, Baker Mayfield is 31 years old, and Chris Godwin Jr. is 30. Besides them, the offense is actually pretty young, ranking as the league’s 12th-youngest unit.

The age really shows on the defensive side, where the average age of 26.44 ranks fourth-oldest in the NFL. A big part of this is due to the team’s free agency period that focused heavily on experienced veterans.

Linebacker Alex Anzalone is 31 years old and will turn 32 in September. Defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson is 31 years old, and edge rusher Al-Aquarian Muhammad is also 31 years old. Add in the return of 32-year-old defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches, and that’s four players over 30 that Tampa Bay signed this offseason.

Outside of free agents, defensive tackle Vita Vea, the heart and soul of the defense, is also 31 years old and entering a contract year.

So while the Bucs do have plenty of talented young players age-25 or younger such as Rueben Bain Jr. Calijah Kancey, Jacob Parrish and Tykee Smith, the average age is being inflated by the flurry of free agency signings.

Having one of the oldest rosters in the league spearheaded by a handful of aging key players puts some major pressure on the team.

When you factor in that a handful of key players like Mayfield, Godwin, and Vea are over 30 years old, reality sets in that this iteration of the Buccaneers won’t last forever. In fact, the roster will look very different just a few years from now.

The Bucs are in win-now mode, and if they want to make a run with this group of players, time is certainly ticking. Bucs fans are quietly looking at a truly pivotal season for the franchise.
