Buccaneers bolster safety depth with savvy signing

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered training camp with dangerously thin depth at the safety position. 

Behind starters Antoine Winfield Jr. and Tykee Smith, the roster left a lot to be desired. Tampa Bay was just one injury away from a significant problem in the secondary. 

Some of the team’s current backup safeties include JJ Roberts, Rashad Wisdom, and Marcus Banks — none of whom have ever started an NFL game. 

After the first day of training camp, the Buccaneers wasted little time addressing the issue, signing veteran safety Ifeatu Melifonwu to provide much-needed insurance in the secondary. 

Ifeatu Melifonwu gives the Buccaneers the safety depth they desperately needed 

Melifonwu has appeared in 53 games with 22 starts, 5.5 sacks, three interceptions and 14 passes defensed throughout his five-year career with the Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins. 

During his breakout 2023 season with the Lions, Pro Football Focus ranked Melifonwu as the NFL’s No. 8 safety with elite grades in coverage and as a pass rusher. He gives the Bucs valuable experience and playmaking ability in their reserve safety room. 

Just as importantly, he offers a proven ability to play the center field safety role, which could give Antoine Winfield Jr. more opportunities to attack the line of scrimmage where he’s been most impactful throughout his career. 

Melifonwu is an ideal fit for Todd Bowles’ defensive system and provides an immediate upgrade for Tampa Bay’s secondary depth. This was a no-brainer move for the Buccaneers and could prove to be another home run signing by Jason Licht and the front office.
