It’s the opening week of the NFL season, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are approaching their showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bengals are a formidable opponent, and one Bucs player will have a particularly difficult assignment. Jacob Parrish, a second-year cornerback who started at nickel last season, is now a full-time starter outside. He’ll immediately be tasked with matching up against the likes of Ja’Marr Chase or Tee Higgins, who form one of the league’s best wide receiver duos.
But Parrish isn’t afraid — quite the opposite, actually. He’s foaming at the mouth for this opportunity, and he’s embracing the challenge to go head-to-head with the league’s best.

Parrish spoke to reporters on Monday and discussed the upcoming season opener. He revealed that he started watching film on the Bengals during the summer break, between minicamp and training camp. He hasn’t been able to sleep this week due to his excitement to take the field on Sunday.
“You can’t ask for no better competition in the first week to go out there and prove yourself… I’m excited for this opportunity to go out there and do what I do,” Parrish said.
Parrish is right — there’s no better competition. Ja’Marr Chase won the triple crown in 2024 with 127 catches for 1,708 yards and 17 touchdowns. Despite Cincinnati starting three different quarterbacks in 2025, Chase managed 125 catches for 1,412 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Bengals' WR2, Higgins, has recorded at least 800 yards and double-digit touchdowns in back-to-back seasons.
Making the transition to outside cornerback would be intimidating for some, especially when you’re first assignment is against such daunting competition. But Parrish isn’t afraid of the challenge. He’s played outside in college, and even recorded an interception playing outside in Week 18 last season, which further boosted his confidence.
“I’ve been training my whole life for this. So go out there and let it all loose… I’m a fearless man, so anytime I step on that field, I’m going to go out there and play like I’m the best player on the field.”
If Parrish can build on a strong rookie season and become a quality starting outside cornerback, it would give the Buccaneers a massive boost in Week 1 and throughout the entire season. Tampa Bay’s defense underwent an overhaul this offseason, but the cornerback spot, and the secondary as a whole, remain some of the roster’s biggest question marks.
Parrish, and the rest of the secondary, can put those doubts to rest by kicking the season off strong with a lockdown performance against one of the league’s most explosive passing offenses. The second-year cornerback has no doubt in his mind that he’ll get the job done.
