Buccaneers could draft the next Vita Vea in 2026 NFL Draft

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have built a defensive identity founded on their commitment to stopping the run, and Vita Vea is the most important piece of that puzzle.

The Bucs have had the No. 1 rushing defense in the NFL since Vea first became a full time starter in 2019. In six of his eight seasons, the Bucs have boasted a top-five rushing defense in the league.

Vea flies under the radar and is often overlooked, but he is the anchor of the Bucs’ defensive line and the key piece to everything Bowles wants to do defensively.

But with Vea entering a contract year in his age-31 season, his time as the Bucs’ enforcer could be coming to a close. The defensive line room as a whole is aging, with no long-term plan. Vea, along with free agent signings A’Shawn Robinson and Rakeem Nunez-Roches are all over 30 years old and all entering free agency next season.

Calijah Kancey is promising when on the field, but he’s yet to play a full healthy season through three years and as a result can’t be counted on as the team’s No. 1 defensive lineman.

Players like Vita Vea don’t grow on trees. But the Buccaneers need to do whatever it takes to find an eventual successor that can maintain Tampa Bay’s dominant run defense for years to come. Luckily, there is a prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft that could be exactly what the Buccaneers are looking for.

Kayden McDonald is quietly a perfect fit for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2026 NFL Draft

Ohio State defensive tackle Kayden McDonald is the elite run stuffer Tampa Bay would love to add as a potential successor to Vita Vea.

At 6-foot-2, 326 pounds, he brings massive size and could play Vea’s role as the nose tackle.

His 92.0 PFF run defense grade ranked No. 1 in the nation out of 887 defensive linemen. He had rare production at the position with 31 solo tackles including nine tackles for loss and three sacks in 2025.

“McDonald emerged as an All-American and was the most dominant defensive player on several of Ohio State’s 2025 tapes, which says a lot considering the defense’s talent,” wrote Dane Brugler in his 2026 NFL Draft guide.

“McDonald’s powerful skill set is at its best when he acts as a run defender. He resets the line of scrimmage with his initial burst and power, attacking and shucking blocks from a leveraged position.”

He’s a dominant, violent run defender who is poised for a long NFL career and just turned 21 years old.  Teams should be licking their chops over a high-floor player who should come in on day one and guarantee a strong run defense for the foreseeable future. The Bucs shouldn’t hesitate to draft McDonald and ensure their run defense remains one of the NFL’s best for years to come
