The Tampa Bay Buccaneers began this year's draft by taking a wide receiver with the team's first pick, and ended it by drafting a player at that position with its last.
Drafting Ohio State's Emeka Egbuka was a bit of a head-scratcher to some, as it seemed teh one position the Bucs were set at was wide receiver. Tampa Bay re-signed Chris Godwin this offseason and already have Mike Evans and Jalen McMillan in the room, as well as Trey Palmer and Sterling Shepard.
That didn't stop Tampa Bay from addressing the position twice, adding Oregon speedster Tez Johnson in the seventh round on Saturday afternoon.
It's a bit of a strange move to double-dip on a luxury, but Jason Licht laid out exactly how he's approaching things after drafting Egbuka in Round 1. He cited losing both Evans and Godwin to injuries and watching the team go 0-3 in games without them as a big reason why he wanted to get some insruance in the room.
That's what Johnson appears to be as the Bucs tie a bow around this year's draft class, and he's drawing some exciting comparisons.
Buccaneers rookie is getting compared to an important Rams offensive weapon
As soon as Johnson was drafted, he started drawing comps to Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Tutu Atwell. That's not a bad guy to get compared to and it's one that should excite Buccaneers fans wondering what he'll bring to the offense.
He won't be replacing anyone, at least not outright, but Johnson is going to be among the most exciting guys to watch in training camp. We'll see what this year's UDFA class brings as well, but the Bucs have a habit of finding guys like Johnson and fitting them into the right spots on the roster.
Maybe it's a kick return situation that Johnson falls into, freeing up Bucky Irving from needing to worry about that responsibility. Or perhaps he becomes a camp darling like Sean Tucker was a few years ago.
Not for nothing, but when Jason Licht drafts guys from Pacific Northwest schools things typically turn out pretty great. Vita Vea and Jalen McMillan both went to Washington and now Johnson comes via Oregon.
So at the very least, there's precedent for this to turn out alright for the Bucs despite it being not much more than a late-round flier.
