The battles between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles over the years have been hard fought, to say the least.
In those battles, the Bucs have demonstrated that they can contend with the best of the best and, in some cases, even beat them. Maybe, in the tough matchup ahead in Week 4, they can draw some inspiration from those players who came before, which would perfectly fit the theme of the Buccaneers celebrating their 50th anniversary.
The Eagles had the Buccaneers' number early in the decade of 2000, with the fierce Eagles knocking the Bucs out of playoff contention in both the 2000 and 2001 Wild Card rounds, but the Bucs would get the last laugh.
If we're looking back on the last half-century of memories, how can anyone forget Rondé Barber’s iconic 92-yard pick-six against the rival Eagles in the 2002 NFC championship Game? It not only sealed the Buccaneers' first Super Bowl berth in franchise history, but also slayed a demon that had been haunting one of the best defenses in NFL history.
Two decades later, and it seems the tables have turned. It was Tampa Bay that put the nail in the coffin of the Eagles’ pitiful 2023 collapse, with the Philly limping to the playoffs after dominating in the first half of the season. The Buccaneers trounced the Eagles in that Wild Card Round that year, sealing the Birds' season with an impressive 32-9. Baker Mayfield had an amazing 337 yards to three touchdowns in his Bucs playoff debut, far outperforming now Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts.
Last year, the Eagles were afforded a rematch against the Bucs early in the season -- which also came in Week 4 -- where again Tampa Bay proved it can hang with a high-caliber team when they trounced Philly for the second time in nine months, pounding the Eagles 33-16.
This time around, the stakes are once again high; both teams head into the matchup undefeated, and each is coming off a masterful comeback. While the Eagles stunned the Rams, Baker was busy becoming the first quarterback to lead his team to three wins in the last minute of a game through the first three weeks of a season.
It's almost been too good to be true, so will the 2024 Super Bowl champion Eagles bring the Bucs back down to earth or will this storybook beginning to the 2025 season carry on for the Buccaneers?
So what does this mean for the Bucs upcoming matchup in 2025 versus the defending champions in week 4 yet again?
If the first three games of the Buccaneers' season are any indicator, fans should be looking forward to another nail-biter of a game. The emergence of rookie wide receiver Embeka Egbuka has ushered us into an elite era of quarterback play by Baker with his hottest start to an NFL season thus far. The offense looks explosive, especially in the designed two-minute fast-paced offense, with Baker seemingly mastering it. Bucky Irving will be a bigger factor in this year's matchup, with the sophomore back taking the RB1 role from Rachaad White this season. However, White has proved he still deserves snaps, scoring the game-winning touchdown for the Bucs in week two.
The Bucs will be without future Hall of Famer Mike Evans, though, which could be a devastating loss for a battle against a powerful Eagles defense, but help may be on the way.
Chris Godwin has returned to practice and is a battle-tested stud at receiver and provides the same sort of veteran comfort for Baker to fill in for his tandem with Mike Evans, with Egbuka looking like a bona fide star. If they're both on the field together, it'll go a long way in helping offset the loss of Evans.
On the defensive side hopefully Bucs fans can look forward to a revenge game by one newly acquired free agent Haason Reddick who was let go by the Eagles and traded to the jets after their disappointing loss to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. In the secondary we should see the continuation of an impressive career for Antoine Winfield Jr. who is off to a stellar start to his 2025 campaign. The safety joined the top ten list, all time, of sacks by a defensive back (18) with his sack in the week three victory. Winfield has 11 tackles and a forced fumble already through three weeks this season.
If the last two seasons and last three games hold any bearing on what's to come, Bucs fans should be lining up out of the stadium to see this heavyweight matchup between two of the league's Goliaths come Sunday afternoon.
