Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans are fortunate to have their franchise quarterback in Baker Mayfield. The New Orleans Saints can't say the same thing. Since Drew Brees retired following a loss to the Bucs in the NFC Divisional Round in early 2021, the Saints have struggled to find a consistent signal-caller, rotating through names like Derek Carr, Trevor Siemian, and Jameis Winston.
New Orleans tried to find its own franchise quarterback in this year's draft, spending a second-round pick on Louisville's Tyler Shough. This was a pretty stunning move considering Shough was not expected to be drafted that high plus he's 26 years old, which is ancient for a rookie.
Well, after a grueling preseason, Shough didn't do enough to win the starting job and lost out to the QB1 gig to... wait for it... Spencer Rattler. The jokes write themselves here.
Saints QB situation continues to bring the laughs for Bucs fans
Making things even funnier here is Saints first-year head coach Kellen Moore's explanation for the decision. He said that Shough will "continue to develop" as he backs up Rattler and this is funny because the Saints drafted him because they figured he could dive right into the offense. If he didn't show that he could do that then the Saints might be regretting their decision to draft him in the first place.
The Bucs aren't going to be worried about the Saints this year and their quarterback position is a big reason why. Rattler proved he can't be the guy for them a season ago and yet he beat out their second-round rookie who the team clearly had high hopes for. As long as the quarterback position is up in the air for the Saints, Bucs fans can pretty much rule the Saints out from being a threat in the NFC South this year.
All of this only makes Buccaneers fans even more grateful for Baker Mayfield and the player he's turned into since coming to Tampa Bay in 2023. Let's hope the Saints never find their next Drew Brees and right now, it appears that Shough is nowhere close to being that.
