Ahead of Father’s Day weekend, Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin announced he is making a uniform change, but it's for all the right reasons. He took to social media to reveal that he's adding “Jr.” to his nameplate on the back of his jersey as a tribute to his late father.
The heartfelt gesture means a slightly new look on the back of his new Buccaneers jersey going forward. It will now read “Godwin Jr.”
It’s not just any Father’s Day for Chris Godwin, it’s his first as a father after his son was born earlier this year. Godwin penned a heartfelt message that was shared to the Buccaneers' social media accounts to announce the name change.
"I also play for the name that's being printed on the back."

"This year, Father's Day represents a full circle moment in my life journey as I get to celebrate being a first-time dad with my son, Ace. Fatherhood has already been an unbelievable experience and has changed me in so many ways. I can only hope that Ace feels the same way about me as I do about my dad.
"As a professional athlete, you are always recognized for the name on the front of your jersey, but I also play for the name that's printed on the back. That's why I have chosen to add 'Jr.' to my name in honor of the man who gave so unselfishly of himself to others and helped mold me into who I am today. Love you, Pops!" wrote Godwin.
Godwin has certainly made his father proud both on and off the field, and the family name holds a huge legacy in Tampa Bay. Godwin has recorded four 1,000 yard seasons and earned a Pro Bowl nod, but more importantly, he’s built a reputation as a leader in the locker room and community. It wouldn't be a shock to see "Godwin Jr." enshrined in the Buccaneers Ring of Honor after his career comes to a close.
