The Tampa Bay Buccaneers held their first of two joint practices with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday ahead of their preseason game on Saturday night.
The Jaguars provide much steeper competition than the Bucs’ previous joint practice opponent, the New York Jets. Jacksonville is no pushover, coming off a 13-4 season.
Based on reports coming out of joint practice, the Buccaneers’ offense didn’t fare well against the Jaguars’ defense on Tuesday.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense got dominated by Jacksonville Jaguars defense in joint practice
The Buccaneers are off to a 2-0 start in the preseason, and they had a strong showing in their previous joint practice against the Jets. The Jaguars are a much bigger challenge, though. Jacksonville provides a valuable opportunity for the Buccaneers to see how they fare against a quality defense, and by all accounts, Tampa Bay struggled to pass the test.
The Jaguars’ defense was all over the Bucs offense, making it difficult for Tampa Bay to find much success throughout the session.
According to Logan Robinson of BucsGameday, the Buccaneers scored just one touchdown during the entire practice on a corner shot to rookie wide receiver Ted Hurst.
Outside of that, it was tough sledding for the Buccaneers.
Starting right tackle Luke Goedeke had a day to forget. According to Pewter Report, Goedeke was beaten all day long by Jaguars pass rusher Josh Hines-Allen.

The unit as a whole got shut down in the two-minute drill to end practice, including an awful sequence that included a near-interception, followed by a delay of game penalty, before Mayfield threw an interception on an apparent miscommunication right into the hands of a defender to close out the drive, per Jaguars beat reporter John Shipley.
It’s certainly a wake-up call for the Buccaneers, and it’s better to have this happen now than when the results count in September.
Tampa Bay is implementing a brand-new scheme under offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, and there are bound to be some hiccups along the way. A team like Jacksonville will take advantage of those weaknesses and shine a spotlight on what Tampa Bay must improve upon.
The Bucs need to adjust quickly and address their flaws that were exposed by the Jaguars before the regular season. Tampa Bay’s offense could be expected to carry the team early, as the defensive unit could have as many as four new starters, including three rookies taking on starting roles. The offense can’t afford to play as poorly as it did today.
But despite being a humbling experience, there’s no reason to overreact. In fact, this is exactly what the Buccaneers needed. Getting outclassed like this should give Tampa Bay all the motivation they need to come back tomorrow and put together a better session. It was a sobering reality check that showed the offense just how much work they still have to do, and with the leadership in this group, the Bucs should be able to learn from today’s practice and get better.
