The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' quarterback room has looked the same over the past two years with Baker Mayfield taking the starting reins and Kyle Trask serving as the backup. If Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports had it his way, they'd be shaking things up a bit and trading for current Titans bust Will Levis.
"The Tennessee Titans aren't rushing to move on from the former second-round pick, at least publicly, but ever since the club's new regime spent this year's No. 1 overall pick on Cam Ward, the writing has been on the wall. Could coach Brian Callahan retain the big-armed youngster as Ward's backup? Perhaps. But the Titans could save $1.6 million by trading Levis after June 1, whereas a trade or release prior to June 1 would've only saved the franchise about $600,000."
Underneath Benjamin's blurb about why the Titans might be looking to move on from Levis, he links three potential landing spots. The Bucs not only are one of them, but they're the team Benjamin predicts to trade for Levis.
Buccaneers predicted to add Will Levis to QB room by CBS Sports
Mayfield is obviously the starter and there's no debating that. The backup spot could be up for debate, however. Trask, a second-round pick by Tampa in the 2021 NFL Draft, has appeared in seven games and thrown 11 passes. He's not exactly primed to slide into an NFL game and help lead the Buccanners to victory if called upon.
Fortunately, the Bucs haven't had to worry since Mayfield is a warrior and never misses games. If he were to miss games though, some might argue that Levis would be a massive upgrade over Trask given his experience in the league.
My argument is that while, yes, Levis does have starting experience in the NFL, experience doesn't always equal success. Levis won just two games in 12 starts a year ago and was more discussed for his memes and mayonnaise commercials than anything he did on the field.
Trask might have very little experience in the league but he's been with the Buccaneers for four years and hopefully has learned a thing or two about their offense by now. It feels like Tampa Bay would be in a much better spot with him as the backup than with Levis taking over that role.
Fortunately, this is just a random prediction and hopefully that's all it stays. No thanks to Levis in Tampa Bay.
