Christian Izien isn’t a household name, but he’s a solid football player and was an important depth piece for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over the last few seasons.
His versatility made him highly valued by Todd Bowles, as Izien proved to be capable of playing any role in the secondary. He’d taken snaps primarily at safety and slot cornerback, but has even played snaps at outside cornerback or in the box when called upon.
Since being signed as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers back in 2023, Izien has recorded 165 tackles, 3 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles, and 5 passes broken up for the Buccaneers. His role decreased in 2025 after Tampa Bay drafted two cornerbacks last offseason in Benjamin Morrison and Jacob Parrish, and made multiple depth signings which relegated Izien to a special teams role.
But despite his decreased role last season, Izien is still a key depth piece that you’d ideally prefer to keep around. The Bucs’ secondary depth just took a major hit with Izien’s departure. The backup safeties behind Antoine Winfield Jr. and Tykee Smith are now JJ Roberts, Rashad Wisdom, and Marcus Banks – none of whom have played meaningful snaps at the pro level. Izien's departure will lead to safety being a position the Bucs must address either later in free agency or during the NFL Draft.
For Izien, he moves onto greener pastures and enters a new situation with the Detroit Lions where he should see more playing time and a more significant role on the defense. The Bucs were really high on rookie JJ Roberts last offseason before he suffered a season-ending injury late in the preseason. The organization will surely be hoping the undrafted free agent out of Marshall will be able to develop into the Izien role to boost the defensive depth and become the team’s next versatile chess piece in the secondary.
