The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have plenty of intriguing storylines and position battles when training camp kicks off later this month.Â
Among them is undrafted free agent quarterback Jalon Daniels, who has impressed the organization throughout the offseason.Â
If Daniels can continue to build momentum when the pads come on, he could shake up the depth chart and force some difficult decisions.Â
Jalon Daniels could make Buccaneers’ 53-man roster with strong training camp and preseasonÂ
Offensive coordinator Zac Robinson called Daniels a standout during rookie minicamp, and he’s also earned praise from quarterback coach Chandler Whitmer and even general manager Jason Licht.
Licht said that there would be a legit backup quarterback competition between Jake Browning, Connor Bazelak, and Jalon Daniels.
While Browning is the early leader in the clubhouse due to his experience with 10 career starts, the other quarterbacks will be given the opportunity to compete.Â
Even if Daniels doesn’t outright win the backup job as an undrafted rookie, he’s put himself in an excellent position to stick around in Tampa Bay.Â
At worst, he appears to be a strong candidate for the practice squad. If he continues to impress, he could even force the front office to uncharacteristically keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, something they’ve rarely done during Licht’s tenure.
There’s no doubt that the Bucs are enamored with their young quarterback, and he has the potential to stick around as the backup behind Baker Mayfield for years to come.Â
Daniels is the ultimate wild card entering training camp, and a strong showing over the next two months could earn him a much bigger role than expected when he signed as an undrafted free agent.
