Baker Mayfield has completely turned his career around since signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023.
He’s led Tampa Bay to two division titles in three seasons, a 27-24 regular season record, and a playoff win. He’s thrown for over 12,000 yards and 95 touchdowns.
Mayfield has certainly elevated himself into the upper echelon of quarterbacks, and now he’s going to want to be paid as such.
Buccaneers, Baker Mayfield could reach massive contract extension this offseason
Baker Mayfield is entering contract year in 2026, but the Bucs could decide to lock him up long-term before the season even begins.
Bucs General Manager Jason Licht appeared on The Drive with TKras on 95.7 WDAE, where he recapped the 2026 NFL Draft and talked about Mayfield’s future.
“Baker is at the forefront of our mind at all times. All of our plans revolve around baker and that’s something that we’ll get to at some point,” said Licht. “We have a great relationship, and listen, nobody here wants Baker to be playing for any other team, so I’ll just leave it at that.”
Licht didn’t leave much to the imagination, making it more than clear the team’s intention is to lock Mayfield up sooner rather than later. It’s a vote of confidence that has to be appreciated by Mayfield after the struggle to find the right fit early in his career.
Mayfield won’t come cheap, though. The Bucs have been getting an extraordinary bargain for his services, but he’s going to want to be paid at market value this time around.
In his first season with the team, he signed a one-year deal worth only $4 million, making him one of the cheapest starting quarterbacks in the league en route to leading the team to a playoff win.
He was rewarded with a three-year, $100 contract that runs through 2026. His $33 million per year ranks No. 16 in the NFL, but he’s played much closer to the top ten for the majority of his Bucs tenure.
Mayfield could realistically receive money on par with quarterbacks of similar production such as Trevor Lawrence, Jordan Love, and Brock Purdy — who are all making at least $53 million per season.
Expect Mayfield to cash in this offseason, as the Buccaneers make a major long-term investment into their franchise quarterback. Mayfield is set to earn a huge raise, and he’ll have to earn it by turning this team around next season and leading them back into playoff contention.
