We've officially hit the middle of the preseason, which seems crazy considering it feels like training camp just started. A lot has happened in the last few weeks, not all of it great for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Injuries have already started to impact position battles. The Bucs have lost both Tristan Wirfs and Antoine Winfield Jr., the former needing to be placed on the PUP list, while two standout rookies are already done for the season.
David Walker suffered a torn ACL earlier in training camp, and it was revealed on Saturday that J.J. Roberts will be placed on season-ending IR with a knee injury.
It's not all bad news, though, which is what we're hopefully going to take away from the Bucs' second preseason game of the year. Both Baker Mayfield and Mike Evans won't be playing because each of them performed so well in joint practice last week that they earned a night off.
Saturday will also be our latest look at star rookie Emeka Egbuka, who is quickly rising as a potential Rookie of the Year candidate thanks to early camp buzz. He'll be joined by starters on offense this week, with Bucky Irving hitting the field for the first time this preseason.
Anyone hoping to see Aaron Rodgers on the other side of the field will be disappointed, however. The Steelers are resting Rodgers for a second straight week, which means it'll be Mason Rudolph starting under center for Pittsburgh.
What channel is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game on tonight? (August 16th)
One reason to tune in tonight will be to see what the latest development in the Buccaneers' backup QB battle has in store. Last Saturday it was Kyle Trask getting the start, and looking impressive in the process.
He'll look to continue that as he tries to stave off Teddy Bridgewater for the QB2 role behind Baker Mayfield. Something that could benefit both quarterbacks' chances of making the team was Tampa Bay releasing Michael Pratt last week after he suffered an injury.
Bridgewater will need to earn his way onto the roster, but that journey takes another step forward tonight.
