The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their fanbase were left reeling earlier this offseason after the departure of franchise legend Mike Evans.
Evans decided to pursue a new opportunity in the final chapter of his career, leaving Tampa Bay after 12 years to join the San Francisco 49ers.
It’s a tough pill to swallow, especially knowing how much good football the future Hall of Famer has left in the tank.
The 49ers are already getting their first taste of the elite presence that Bucs fans grew to know and love, and Evans has quickly become the biggest story coming out of 49ers OTAs.
George Kittle, 49ers are blown away by Mike Evans
49ers tight end George Kittle, who played a major role in recruiting Evans to San Francisco, appeared on Up & Adams and raved about his new teammate.
"Everybody's getting cooked by Mike [Evans]" 🤣

“He was cooking everybody, I don’t care who it is,” said Kittle. “You can’t just cover him one-on-one really. He’s going to win almost every single time. Him and Brock immediately established a rhythm, which was really fun to watch… Everything he does is just at such a high level of professionalism.”
“He came in and everybody’s just so happy with Mike. He’s awesome.”
Kittle doubled down that Evans is cooking 49ers No. 1 cornerback Deommodore Lenoir, along with anyone else trying to cover him.
This isn’t the first time Kittle has heaped praise on Evans since he signed with San Francisco. He recently told reporters how star-struck he continues to be over his new teammate.
George Kittle on Mike Evans:

“If you look back at the 49ers, this is the first legit veteran WR I’ve had on my roster since Emmanuel Sanders in 2019. Just to see him run routes and the way that he sees things, it’s just so fun… Mike just brings a whole new thing. In the red… pic.twitter.com/xVR5QMKDdX
“My first reaction every day is still, ‘Wow, Mike Evans is actually here.’ I’m probably annoying him at this point because I keep saying it, but it’s true… I pinch myself every day. This is like the first legit veteran WR I’ve had on my roster since Emmanuel Sanders in 2019. He’s a Hall of Famer… he takes ball seriously.”
Evans wanted a chance to compete for a Super Bowl before he retires, and San Francisco gives him the perfect opportunity.
The 49ers have won at least 12 games in three of the past four seasons. They’re legitimate Super Bowl contenders, and landing Evans was the cherry on top.
It’s a strange feeling for the Buccaneers to be on the outside looking in at Evans’ greatness, watching from afar as he becomes an immediate locker-room leader and fan favorite in a new uniform.
But the past is the past. Evans chose a different path as he enters the twilight of his career, and he’s embraced his fresh start in San Francisco.
All that Buccaneers fans can do now is root for him from afar until the day he signs a one-day contract and retires as a Buccaneer.
