The NFL is full of great post-draft stories, and maybe someday, new Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle DeMonte Capehart will be remembered for what he does on the field.
There is nothing like hearing your phone ring on draft day if you are an aspiring NFL player. It brings emotion to the game and connects with fans on a more personal level. That time is one of the few as players are no longer "us" but pro-athletes.
Capehart tried his best to remain cool and collected, but emotions finally got the better of him when he spoke with Todd Bowles. His comments will now become a locker-room statement, but first, he has to make the impact he hopes to.

DeMonte Capehart give Tampa Bay Buccaneers a reason to believe they go their pick right.
13 defensive tackles were taken before Capehart. He patiently (probably not) waited for his name to be called as pick after pick went by, but he believes in himself.
"You know what you got coach? You got the best defensive tackle in this draft."DeMonte Capehart
The rookie DT spoke through tears, but his message was clear. He believes he is ready for the next step in his career, and fans should be thrilled as well.
Capehart has a strong future ahead of him. He has a high developmental ceiling and will get the time and reps to get better throughout camp and the upcoming 2026 season. While his draft stock slid, it can't all be blamed on his production.
For the last several years, Clemson has been churning out top draft prospects, but their 2025 season was a disappointment on both sides of the ball. As a result, the typically loaded Tigers' prospect pool wasn't nearly as deep. Only two players from the school were drafted in round one, including fellow DT Peter Woods.
Also hindering his stock was his inability to get starting reps. In his six seasons, he only started 12 games. That isn't going to win over fans despite his comment.
Again, there is room to grow and develop within the Buccaneers' system. While the "Best in this year's draft" comment might be a little premature, it's good to know he believes he can be.
