The Tampa Bay Buccaneers under head coach Todd Bowles place a premium on versatility in the secondary.

The team places a lot of value on players that can be cross-trained between nickel, safety, and even outside cornerback in a pinch.

Christian Izien was the do-it-all defensive back for the Bucs over the last few years. He was signed as an undrafted free agent back in 2023 and won the starting nickel cornerback job for his rookie year. Since then, he served as a key backup that could step in anywhere in the secondary.

But Izien left Tampa Bay as a free agent this offseason in search of a bigger role and a chance to start. He signed with the Detroit Lions, and based on on early reports out of OTAs, it seems like he’s getting his opportunity.

While All-Pro Kerby Joseph remains out with a knee injury and his status unknown, Izien has taken first snaps with the first-team defense throughout OTAs, per Lions reporter Justin Rogers.

Detroit’s Brian Branch tore his Achilles last year, so the string of injuries to key secondary players appears to have opened the door for Izien to step into a major role.

“I like Izien a lot. We played against him. He’s a pretty headsy player. He’s pretty violent. See ball, hit ball,” said head coach Dan Campbell via Pride of Detroit’s Jeremy Reisman.

During his three years in Tampa Bay, Izien played in 45 out of a possible 51 games. He recorded 165 total tackles along with three interceptions, three forced fumbles, and five passes defensed.

He’s made the most of his limited opportunities, and he can’t be blamed for betting on himself in search of a more significant role elsewhere.

Izien has a real chance to solidify himself as a key player for the Lions in 2026, and earn the starting role he’s been searching for.
