While there's plenty of drama with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers right now, another team in the NFC South caught an even worse break this week.

Earlier in the week it was reported that quarterback Michael Penix Jr. might miss time with a knee injury. That very quickly snowballed into Penix hitting injured reserve with a torn ACL that will require surgery to repair.

It's objectively a nightmare, both from the human perspective that this is yet another ACL injury that Penix has suffered and the fact that the Bucs will now face Kirk Cousins when the two teams meet in December.

That's not the only connection the Penix injury has with the Buccaneers.

Falcons sign Kyle Trask to help fill out quarterback room after Michael Penix Jr. injury

Cousins will be the quarterback stepping up into the starting role with Penix out for the season, but the Falcons are fortifying the room with a former Bucs quarterback. Kyle Trask, who was released as part of the team's final roster cuts, has been signed to Atlanta's practice squad.

This is the second team to have taken a look at Trask this season. Earlier in the year the Colts brought Trask in for a workout, but didn't end up signing him. That workout was the first look he'd gotten since being released by the Bucs in August, but now Trask returns to the NFC South with a real chance to find his way back to an active NFL roster.

It's also possible that he's back on the sideline in Tampa Bay when the two teams play in Week 15. Given Cousins' injury history, and lack of late-season success, it's not totally outside the realm of possibility that Trask could play against his old team.

That's getting a little ahead of ourselves, but the fact remains that Trask is finally back with an NFL team. Zac Robinson is an offensive guru plucked from the Sean McVay tree, too, which potentially bodes well for Trask finding his footing and restarting his career after a disappointing stint with the Bucs.
