Former Buccaneers Super Bowl-winning safety cleared for NFL comeback

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Jordan Whitehead is one step closer to returning to the NFL.

After missing the entire 2025 season with a serious neck injury suffered in a car accident, Whitehead has made a remarkable recovery. He has been medically cleared to resume his career and is already drawing interest from multiple teams. 

Whitehead was an impact safety for the Buccaneers after the team selected him in the 2018 NFL Draft. From 2018-21, he recorded 292 tackles, two sacks, five interceptions and 25 passes defensed and served as a key member of Tampa Bay’s Super Bowl-winning squad in 2020.

Whitehead signed with the  New York Jets in 2022, spending two seasons there before returning to the Bucs as a depth piece in 2024. However, his second stint in Tampa Bay was cut short following the car accident that left his career in jeopardy. 

Now, Whitehead is preparing for the next chapter of his NFL career, and he’s already become an intriguing option for teams looking for veteran help in the secondary.

NFL insider Mike Garafolo reported that Whitehead has been cleared to return following his neck surgery, and he’s commanding immediate interest around the league. 

“Veteran S Jordan Whitehead has been fully cleared to resume his football career post-neck surgery by Alex Vaccaro, his surgeon and the #Eagles’ spine specialist. Whitehead had recent workouts with the #Colts and #Texans and is expected to meet with more teams soon,” Garafolo shared on X.

Whitehead was a tone-setter for the Bucs secondary and provided some unforgettable plays including a crucial forced fumble in the 2020 NFC Championship Game.

His time in Tampa Bay will be remembered fondly, and Bucs fans will be rooting for him as he makes his triumphant return to the NFL.
