Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, who remains a diehard fan of the team to this day, doesn’t approve of how the coaching staff has approached this season.
McCoy, now a fixture in football media, appeared on ESPN’s This is Football, and named the Buccaneers the most disappointing team in the NFL through three weeks.
His diagnosis of the team’s issues that have contributed to the 0-3 start is a resounding indictment of the current regime, and the message carries even more weight coming from a franchise great.

“I know for sure there’s things that are being coached that I wouldn’t coach. Everybody coaches different. I heard some things that are being taught to these guys and I say 'that's not going to work.," McCoy said.
McCoy has plenty of issues with how the Buccaneers are being coached, going as far as to say there’s no surprise why this team can’t generate a pass rush. One of his main gripes, which has been a common sentiment held by fans under Todd Bowles’ leadership, is the frequency at which pass rushers are being asked to drop into coverage. McCoy blames that tendency for Rueben Bain’s slow start.
“You drafted him to generate a pass rush. A lot of people thought he was a steal. You haven’t even established him as what he does best. And he’s doing all this dropping [into coverage].”
Further diagnosing the pass rush woes, McCoy questioned the lack of playing time for David Walker, who stood out all offseason and already has two sacks on the season.
“Walker, he’s the best pass rusher we got, and he barely plays. I don’t know why he barely plays…Things of that sort and how these guys are being coached, I feel like is a detriment to them.”
McCoy was careful with his words. He even clarified that his problem wasn’t with the coaches, but with how the players are being coached. But reading between the lines, he clearly sees major flaws in the Buccaneers’ operation.
He didn’t stop at the defense, either, sharing his concerns about the struggling offense as well.
“The most surprising thing is how off Baker and this offense looks. Zac Robinson – I thought he was going to put together something. It’s just not looking good and our O-line man, golly. It just doesn’t look good.”
McCoy still cares deeply about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which makes his criticism especially notable. A franchise icon who has remained closely connected to the team is observing the same problems as the fan base with the way the team is being coached. Perhaps he could share some of his expertise and help coach up this young defensive front in ways the coaching staff has struggled to do.
